What do all these specs mean?

Memory spec terms

If you're not sure if a module or kit is right for your system, use the RamCity Upgrade Finder for a list of guaranteed compatible modules.

  • Non-ECC — Most consumer desktop and laptop computers require Non-ECC memory.
  • ECC/Parity — ECC or parity modules look for errors in data and correct the more common types of internal data corruption.  Modules with this feature are most often found in servers and workstations with high value applications that require maximum uptime.
  • Unbuffered — Most consumer PCs and workstations use unbuffered memory which is faster than registered memory.
  • Registered/Buffered — Registered or buffered modules delay all information transferred to the module by one clock cycle. This type of memory is primarily used in servers where there is a need for scalability and stability.
  • Fully Buffered — Fully buffered modules feature an advanced architecture that became popular with DDR2 modules and does not have the same overhead associated with Registered modules.
  • CL — CAS (column address strobe) latency, which is the delay between when a command is issued by the memory controller and the moment the data is available, usually expressed in the number of clock cycles it takes.  Lower CL is faster. Modules with a different CL can be mixed on the same system, but all modules will only run at the highest (slowest) CL.
  • Component configuration — (For example: 16-chip 128Mx8) Indicates the quantity and size of the memory chip components on the module.
  • Voltage — For example 1.5V. Indicates the power used by the module. A lower number means less power usage. Some modules support standard and low voltage, if the system supports it, such as 1.5V / 1.35V.
