The maximum memory your OS will recognise (whether it be Windows, Mac OS, or Linux/Unix) depends on the version you are running. 32-bit operating systems (which most people use) will usually see (and utilise) somewhere between 3GB to 3.5GB, depending on the peripheral configuration and motherboard limitations.
