"If you can use it and can afford it, the Samsung SM951-NVMe could be the fastest SSD released in 2015. The low latency makes this drive very fast under normal desktop use and the high throughput delivers your hefty files faster than ever."

"In terms of performance, the NVMe version of the SM951 offers an upgrade over its AHCI sibling. The average data rate (i.e. large IO performance) isn't dramatically better compared to the AHCI version, but when it comes to small IO latency the SM951 and NVMe in general show their might."

****** WARNING *******

We don't recommend secure erasing the SM951, and doing so may void your warranty. Although some have reported being able to successfully secure erase, there has been at least one case reported to us of the drive being rendered useless after several secure erases with Parted Magic.

*Note, the video below details installation of the SM951 - AHCI version. Installation of the NVMe version is very similar, and we will update this video once we have fully tested the drive in a Z170 based system in a few weeks time.*

The Samsung SM951 128GB NVMe M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 80mm (2280) Internal SSD - OEM is the current world champion of M.2 SSD's, offering incredible performance in a tiny form factor. It provides up to a blistering 2150MB/s read and 1550MB/s write sequential data transfer rates (512GB capacity).

The Samsung SM951 128GB NVMe M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 80mm (2280) Internal SSD - OEM is generally compatible in a wide variety of systems with a free M.2 socket, and can also be installed in systems without an M.2 socket using an M.2 to PCIe adapter. Full operating system boot support is available in both situations, so long as the correct support is built into the system UEFI BIOS code. Since the SM951 does not have it's own option ROM, this is an essential requirement. Below is a general guide but for more specific compatibility information see our monster M.2 compatibility guide, or contact us if you want to check compatibility in your system.

  • Most Z97-based motherboards. Note, some boards have just 2x PCIe lanes on the M.2 socket. Check your system documentation as 4x PCIe lanes are required for maximum performance). In addition, there are a limited number of PCIe lanes available on Z97 systems (maximum 16), so you should consider this when installing a PCIe m.2 SSD, as it will consume some PCIe lanes and limit the number available to your GPU(s).
  • All X99-based motherboards. Check your system documentation for any required M.2 socket switch changes, as 4x PCIe lanes are required for maximum performance
  • All Z170-based motherboards, with some boards even supporting 3x M.2 sockets that can be configured to have multiple M.2 SSD's in RAID. Note, like Z97 systems, there are a limited number of PCIe lanes available on Z170 motherboards. Some references say maximum 16 lanes, other say 20. Some of these lanes are used when M.2 PCIe lanes are installed in the system, which limits the number of PCIe lanes available for a discrete GPU.
  • Unlike the SM951 AHCI version, the SM951 NVMe is *NOT* known to be compatible in 2006-2010 classic model Mac Pro computers (when combined with a standard PCIe adapter)
  • New generation i7 model Intel NUC®
  • Many new generation laptops
  • **NOTE** - the SM951 (either the NVMe or AHCI version) is not compatible in any Apple MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Mini, or the current 'cylindrical' model Mac Pro.
  • Please refer to our monster M.2 compatibility guide for the latest information!
  • **NOTE** - current Windows 10 NVMe drivers have poor write performance. Samsung / HP have released an updated NVMe driver which corrects this issue. Web search 'HP Samsung nvme driver' to find the latest version.

Key Features

  • Extreme performance - up to 2150/1500 sequential read/write data transfer rates
  • PCIe 3.0 device, backwards compatible with PCIe 2.0
  • Small M.2 form factor plugs straight into your PCIe-based M.2 socket with no additional cables required

What's in the Box

  • Bare SSD, enclosed in an anti-static bag, custom foam padding and custom box especially made for RamCity to package the XP941/SM951
