"When comparing to any SATA 3 SSD, there really is no comparison for us to demonstrate just how much faster the Samsung XP941 M.2 PCIe SSD is..."

"The XP941 is without a doubt the fastest consumer SSD in the market."

"Without question, the Samsung XP941 is the fastest consumer SSD in the world."

Now confirmed compatible in desktop machines including the 2006-2012 Model Mac Pro!

The latest news on the XP941 is that it is fully compatible and bootable in all new Intel X99-chipset motherboards, and with most previous generation Z97-chipset based motherboards, such as the ASRock Z97 Extreme6 (no adapter required).  To get the XP941 working in the ASUS Z97 Pro motherboard, see these excellent instructions. When combined with a M.2 to PCIe adapter, the Samsung XP941 provides class-leading storage performance in desktop machines and is also fully bootable in all cMP Mac Pro models (2006-2012, excluding the 'tube' model). See the table at the bottom of this page for approximate throughput figures.

The new standard

The Samsung XP941 SSD in the new M.2 form factor is set to supercede the older mSATA format.  Weighing in at just 8g, it's 1/5th the weight of a standard 2.5-inch SSD and takes up just 1/7th of the space.

image of battery

Ultra green

Consuming just 80 mW of power when idle, and 5.8 W when fully active, the Samsung XP941 delivers longer battery life without sacrificing performance.

Life in the fast lane

The Samsung XP941 interfaces directly with your system via PCIe, eliminating the speed bottleneck associated with older SATA based technology. Using up to 4 PCIe 2.0 lanes, this allows the 512GB model to deliver sequential performance like you've never seen before - up to 1170MB/s read and 950MB/s write.

For desktops, laptops and 2006-2012 model Mac Pro

The new M.2 SSD format (previously known as NGFF - New Generation Form Factor) is compatible with the latest generation netbooks and notebooks containing a PCIe M.2 socket, such as the new Sony Vaio Pro.

To use this SSD in a desktop machine or cMP Mac Pro (all 2006-2012 models prior to the current cylindrical shaped one), you will need a free PCIe slot, and an M.2 to PCIe adapter. Booting is supported in the Mac Pro.

Note, system boot on Windows desktop PC's is only supported on certain Z97 and X99 chipset-based motherboards with built-in M.2 sockets. Booting with the XP941 is not currently supported in a Windows PC with the XP941 drive in conjunction with the adapter , but it works perfectly without drivers as a storage drive.

Review our M.2 SSD compatibility list blog post if you are not sure if this drive is compatible in your machine.

Rugged and reliable

With no moving parts, the Samsung XP941 provides extreme reliability and durability in adverse operating conditions, with a MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) of 1,500,000 hours, and an operating tolerance between 0C and 70C temperatures. Combined with an AFR (Annual Failure Ratio) of just 0.6%, these features make the Samsung XP941 a dependable and high performance storage solution for your system.

Latest technology

The XP941 M.2 format SSD represents the very latest in ultra high performance storage, from Samsung - the world leader in advanced memory technology. It doubles the performance available from current generation 7mm, 9.5mm and mSATA format solid state drives, and delivers this in a package that takes up as little as 1/7th of the space.

Designed and Built by Samsung

Samsung SSDs are designed completely in-house, allowing exceptional quality control and engineering capabilities. Samsung also builds all of the main SSD components itself. The result is products with outstanding performance and reliability, designed to enhance your computing experience.

* To achieve maximum throughput in the 2008 Mac Pro, one or two of the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots must be used. These models have two x16 PCIe 2.0 slots and two x4 PCIe 1.0 slots. The latter PCIe 1.0 slots will only allow up to 585-753MB/s data transfer rates.

** From the review at barefeats.com: "Using the 'Expansion Slot Utility' in the System/Library/CoreServices folder, we reconfigured the PCIe slot speeds to various combinations of 4, 8, and 16 lane slots to benchmark the XP941. The transfer speeds above were achieved using the 4 lane slots. The 8 lane and 16 lane slots did not produce any faster transfer speeds. On other other hand, if you use a 1 lane slot, the transfer speeds drop to 200MB/s READ and 170MB/s WRITE. We tested with both OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. OS X Tiger kernel panicked at startup. Though we didn't try it, it should also work with OS X Lion, the last Mac OS to be officially supported on the 2006 Mac Pro."

*** To achieve the listed throughput rates on a PC/Workstations/Server platform, a PCIe 2.0 x4 or higher slot is required (e.g. PCIe 2.0 x8 or PCIe 2.0 x16). PCIe 1.0 slots may provide lower performance, depending on the number of PCIe lanes allocated to the slot.

Samsung XP941 256GB AHCI PCIe SSD Purchase/Install

By: Pentti Ahlgren on 17 February 2016
Purchasing was easy and delivery on time, Ramcity has good information on installing and using the SSD, combined with that info and little research I was able to do a clean install of Windows 10 without any issues on a Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H motherboard, system has now been running a few weeks without any issues. Note this motherboard only supports 2 x channel PCIe so you will not get Full speed as per 4 channels that the SSD is capable of but still a lot faster than my original Samsung 840EVO via Sata 3 Install info: Samsung XP941 setup for Gigabyte GA-Z97-D3H 1. Use Win 10 media creator to create USB boot/install device 2. Use Latest Intel RAID drivers “Intel_RAID_Win……) - place these on a CD/DVD/other disk 3. Bios > Peripherals > SATA Configuration: a. SATA Mode = RAID b. M.2 PCIe SSD RAID Mode = Enabled 4. Bios > BIOS Features: a. Boot Mode = UEFI Only b. Other PCI Devices ROM Priority = UEFI OpROM c. Storage… = UEFI Only 5. Save Bios & Restart from USB install 6. When Install asks for “Where to install windows…” a. Click on “Load Driver” - when finished choose the XP941 partition 7. Should reboot from the XP941 automatically when install completes

At the other side of the globe, and still excellen

By: JAN DIL on 5 May 2015
I bought the XP941 for the newest Intel NUC 515MYHE, not realizing this newest model had a B-key type connector, unlike its former versions, so that it could not handle the newest and fastest Samsung SSD's. Ramcity's support had also missed this non-compatibility and immediately issued a Return Authorization and refunded the part. At the same time I had ordered an SM951 for an Asus Maximus VII Impact board, probably the smallest-fastest mini ITX available with a PCIe 3rd gen x4 slot. I don't use the CPU & I/O for gaming but for excessive data handling and number crunching. Installing Windows 7 Prof 64bits was not possible from a bootable DVD, but went smoothly with a fast USB stick with the ISO-image "burned" on it using the free download from Rufus, as Ramcity had indicated in one of its blogs. Without that trick, I still would have been busy installing the disc, thinking something was wrong with its BIOS. Unbelievably fast products supported by dedicated and excellent people! Works well

By: Nathanael Mooth on 2 April 2015
My motherboard required this specific M.2 and all the other parts retailers either didn't have it or were wildly overpriced. RamCity was well priced and shipping went without a hitch. I have installed the card and use it as my boot drive and now my computer runs at least a magnitude faster than it used to. Overall I am very impressed.

Very pleased

By: Terence Kuch on 5 January 2015
The service and price for this SSD was very impressive. The only issues I had was on the motherboard end - I expected the Gigabyte X99 chipset board to natively accept booting from M.2 but it did not. I needed to get a BIOS update (not listed on their website) to get it bootable. Any way it's working now and the boot times now blow my Vertex II out of the water, and without the cabling mess! - Super pleased

Fantastically Fast. *Read the Blog posts, they wil

By: Derek Hughes on 9 December 2014
I ordered this XP941 and it is lightning fast when used correctly. If you can get 4 PCIe lanes running to this drive you can achieve some very fast rates. I have seen in excess of 1500MB/s burst on optimised I/O size reads in Linux. Even when only using 2 PCIe lanes the device was still very fast. Look out for MBO traps where often M.2 interfaces share PCIe lanes with some SATA ports and or PCIe interfaces. I picked a board based upon the ability to run this card at full 4x speed on a carrier card and all of my SATA devices. It is important to consider the booting capability of the drive in your end solution. I am using a carrying card, so can not boot the device in my computer. Running Linux I am able to keep my MBR, boot partition and kernels on a small USB drive. The SSD runs everything else. As soon as the Kernel is loaded and things start running from the SSD it is blazingly fast. Gone are the days of waiting for disk activities when loading applications.
