For desktops, laptops and 2006-2012 model Mac Pro

The new M.2 SSD format (previously known as NGFF - New Generation Form Factor) is compatible with the latest generation netbooks and notebooks containing a PCIe M.2 socket, such as the new Sony Vaio Pro.

To use this SSD in a desktop machine or cMP Mac Pro (all 2006-2012 models prior to the current cylindrical shaped one), you will need a free PCIe slot, and an M.2 to PCIe adapter. Booting is supported in the Mac Pro.

Note, system boot on Windows desktop PC's is only supported on certain Z97 and X99 chipset-based motherboards with built-in M.2 sockets. Booting with the XP941 is not currently supported in a Windows PC with the XP941 drive in conjunction with the adapter , but it works perfectly without drivers as a storage drive.

* To achieve maximum throughput in the 2008 Mac Pro, one or two of the PCIe 2.0 x16 slots must be used. These models have two x16 PCIe 2.0 slots and two x4 PCIe 1.0 slots. The latter PCIe 1.0 slots will only allow up to 585-753MB/s data transfer rates.

Purchased an M.2 SSD upgrade from another supplier. It was not recognised by my laptop. RAM City support explained why and recommended a suitable M.2 SSD for my laptop. Installed, ran up, all good. Very happy. Before you rush ahead to upgrade an SSD in your laptop or pc I suggest you touch base with RAM city. They know this stuff and it will save you money, time and grief. Their online docs are also quite useful.

Just "wow"!

First, I have to say I actually dislike doing surveys; but RAM City did such an exceptional job, I'm happy to provide this glowing review for them. I have owned my Sony VAIO Pro 13 for well over a year. Its a great ultrabook but the space limits on the standard 128GB XP941 SSD soon became a problem for me. After much waiting for the right time (price was a factor of course), I decided to buy the 512GB XP941 equivalent from RAM City. I didn't really expect much from RAM City - place my order, wait for the wheels to turn and it'll arrive eventually. Boy, was I mistaken! I had ordered the SSD at about 9pm on a Saturday night and the package arrived at my door on Tuesday morning! Oh, and about the SSD itself? It is performing impeccably. Its so nice to have room to breathe again. I can actually install new apps and perform Windows updates without worrying about space. It is noticeably zippier too. Quite happy with my purchase, thank you.

Samsung XP941 512GB M.2 PCIe x4 80mm SSD

This SSD is fitted to an Asrock Z97 Extreme6 motherboard, in the Ultra slot so as to be able to use it for the OS. It forms part of a complete system rebuild, the other major items being 32GB of DDR3 2133 RAM, an i7 4790K CPU, an 850 Pro 1TB SSD for file storage and an AMD W600 graphics card with 6 x display port outlets. I guess it's obvious I have a fairly specialised requirement. On boot-up I tried to load Win7 Pro 64-bit and ran into problems. I recalled reading somewhere that Win10 had loaded OK onto the Extreme6/XP941 combo so I downloaded the 9926 evaluation version, loaded it onto the USB and again struck problems trying to load the OS. A scroll through the UEFI revealed, as I recall it, an option to force a PCI-e setting to M.2 rather than let it auto-select, and that simple tweak enabled Win10 to load. After a week or so putting up with the buggy evaluation OS I decided to upgrade back to Win7, but again struck the error screen that Rod covers so well in the blog. At that point I read the fine print at the bottom of the screen and realised that more detailed help was further down. I duly followed the blog/forum trail, downloaded the .efi files, modified the USB and Win7 installed without further problem. Now - what I cannot do is quote all sorts of statistics and show comparison charts and give all the wonderful technical spec stuff that is already abundant on the 'net. Sure, I've put together a fairly high-end rig and the XP941 is just one part of it, but what I can say is that I'm delighted with the end result. If I'd been a little less anxious and a little more careful in reading Rod's blog, especially when he told me to scroll a bit further down the page, then I'd have had Win7 up and running a lot sooner than I did. I've read other reviews that say there's minimal performance difference between the XP941 and other high end SSD drives and again I'm unable to pass judgment. I simply don't have the capacity to make that sort of evaluation. What I can say is that from "push the start button" to having the Win7 password input screen waiting for me takes maximum 25 seconds, usually less (it's inconsistent). Enter the password, hit return, and in maximum 7 seconds the desktop is up. From there it usually takes around 20 seconds to load my various start-up apps and I'm ready to roll. Give or take - 1 minute from button push to being ready to work. That's good? Bad? I've no idea - you judge - but I'm certainly happy with it.
